最近看了BBC在1973年播出、根据托马斯·哈代（Thomas Hardy）小说改编的电视系列剧Wessex Tales，其中一部是Fellow Townsman，也许可以翻译为《同镇人》。因为结局悲催，我忍不住看了原著同名短篇小说，结果发现小说的结局……更加悲催。
不过在看小说时，注意到其中有这么一句话：
He did so, to the letter, and though, as the crocus followed the snowdrop and the daffodil the crocus in Lucy’s garden, the harbour-road was a not unpleasant place to walk in, Barnet’s feet never trod its stones, much less approached her door.
其中 as the crocus followed the snowdrop and the daffodil the crocus 用来形容春天来临和时光的流逝。在英国生活过的人都会明白其中雪钟花（snowdrop）、番红花（crocus）、黄水仙（daffodil）的开花顺序，而且不需要熟悉园艺才能明白，因为这三种花都是在英国遍地可见的野花。
这是今年花园里最早开放的黄水仙之一“喷射火”（Jet Fire），已经种了两季了，感觉火焰有点褪色了。另一种同时开花的是矮株黄水仙。
