苏格兰诗人彭斯（Robert Burns）创作的许多歌词，其中最著名的莫过于Ae Fond Kiss。这是彭斯于1791年写给他的情人克拉琳达（Clarinda）的一首告别诗，在爱丁堡市中心Royal Mile上的Canongate Kirk教堂墓园内有克拉琳达的墓碑。

他还改编了不少传统民歌，修改或是重新歌词，包括这首苏格兰情歌My Luve is Like a Red, Red Rose。彭斯曾到苏格兰乡村采集民歌，这首歌有多个来源，不同版本，彭斯用Scots语重新编写而成，比如其中的luve（即love）、melodie（即melody）、play’d（即played）。Scots曾是流行于苏格兰低地的一种语言，也有人认为是一种方言，因为大部分词汇是英语。
