前一段时间看到一则新闻，说是英格兰西北部一家书店卖出了一本儿童读物《征服者威廉和黑斯廷斯之战》（William the Conqueror and the Battle of Hastings）。此书本身没有什么特别之处，神奇的是，卖出时它在这家书店已经上架了27年，而当初入货的店员今年也已经84岁了。书店发出的消息说，一般一本书一年左右没卖出去，他们就会把书退给出版社，但是有时候也会把书留下来等待售出，因为“我们一直都相信这一天是会到来的”。

Comedians’ autobiographies and misery memoirs
大选期间，英国畅销书排行榜和英国新书介绍暂停两周。不过在上周六的《卫报》上，我看到了一段 Simon Hoggart 的文章，用讽刺的口气形容英国畅销书的几个种类，抄来和大家分享：
“……它是一个理智与厚重的岛屿，在它周围，满是喜剧演员的自传(‘我一天操了一打女人，说实在的我真的发狂了。’) 悲惨回忆录(‘父亲醉得都没法把钥匙插到锁眼中，我害怕听到他的声音，因为我知道他会冲我而来。’) 以及电视名厨同步出版的菜谱(‘把峨螺挤到鳄梨中去，嗨，成了！’)”
…it remains an island of sanity and gravitas in the midst of all those comedians’ autobiographies (“I was shagging a dozen women a day, and frankly I was out of control”), misery memoirs (“I dreaded the sound of my father, drunk, trying to get his key in the lock, for I knew what was to come”) and winsome TV chef tie-ins (“cram the whelks into the avocado, and hey presto!”).
