提起牛顿，大家都知道他是一位伟大的数学家和物理学家，但是不为许多人所知的是，牛顿还做了27年的英国皇家铸币厂的总管(Warden of the Royal Mint)。在任期间，在与伪币制造者的斗争中，牛顿积极参与搜集证据、使用卧底、拷问犯人，成为一名严厉的罪犯侦缉者。

17世纪末期，英国面临着了一场货币危机，市场上充斥着伪币劣币，白银走私盛行。当时英国有两套银币，一套由手工打制，很容易被人削刮，结果银币越来越轻，另一套由机器压制，较难仿制。当时的财相 Lowndes 在咨询了社会贤达(其中包括已经功成名就的牛顿)之后，采纳了重铸银币的建议，并于1696年把牛顿从剑桥三一学院请到伦敦，主持皇家铸币厂。
