世界读书夜(World Book Night)是上个周末在英国举行的一个读书活动。倡议者之一是爱丁堡的出版社Canongate的创办人，除了有公开的“作者朗读”活动之外，世界读书夜的核心活动是免费赠书，由志愿者在英国各地向公众赠书，据说赠书总数可达一百万本。赠书也不是什么书都可以，而是要根据一份特制的书单，共25本。
书单中的书目并非是获得最多奖、名气最大的文学作品，而是包括了从严肃文学到类型小说、从诗歌到传记的多种题材类型，从中可以看出英国人心目中的好书以及普罗大众都有兴趣阅读的图书。书单中的图书大部分是二十世纪出版的小说，有严肃文学小说比如David Mitchell的Cloud Atlas，有类型小说比如间谍小说经典 John le Carré的The Spy Came in from the Cold、Lee Child 的犯罪悬疑小说 Killing Floor和英国作家CJ Sansom 的以都铎王朝为题材的历史悬疑小说 Dissolution。除了有经典文学如小说Erich Maria Remarque的All Quiet on the Western Front，也有最近出版的小说如David Nicholls在2009年出版的One Day。
反映在作者的多样性上，书单上除了有英国小说如 Muriel Spark的The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie之外，还有加拿大小说家Margaret Atwood的The Blind Assassin、美国小说家Toni Morrison的Beloved、爱尔兰诗人Seamus Heaney的New Selected Poems、翻译文学Gabriel García Márquez的Love in the Time of Cholera，另外还有世界题材的英语小说如Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie 的Half of a Yellow Sun和Rohinton Mistry的A Fine Balance。
在非小说类图书上，有传记文学如Alan Bennett的回忆录A Life Like Other People’s。非小说中Ben Macintyre的Agent Zigzag是比较独树一帜的，以二战期间的著名间谍，化名Zigzag的双料间谍Eddie Chapman。Ben Macintyre的新作Operation Mincemeat 我在英国新书系列中已经做了介绍。
